Safety Tips When Using Your Fire Pit at Home

As the sun sets and the cool evening breeze rolls in, there’s no better way to create a cozy ambiance in your backyard than by gathering around a crackling fire pit. Whether you’re roasting marshmallows, sharing stories or simply enjoying the warmth, a fire pit can be a wonderful addition to your outdoor space. However, it’s essential to prioritize safety when using one.

Here are some crucial safety tips to keep in mind when using a fire pit at home:

1. Choose the right location—Selecting the right location for your fire pit is paramount. Ensure it’s at least 10 to 20 feet away from your home, trees, shrubs and any flammable structures or materials. The area should be flat and level to prevent accidental tipping. Never place your fire pit on a wooden deck unless you have a fireproof mat underneath. a close up of a fire

2. Check local regulations—Before you start building or using your fire pit, check with your local authorities for any regulations or permits required. Some areas have restrictions on the size and type of fire pit you can have, and knowing the rules will help you stay compliant.

3. Use a fire ring or pit screen—A fire ring or a fire pit screen acts as a protective barrier that prevents embers and sparks from escaping, reducing the risk of accidental fires. Ensure it fits securely over the fire and is in good condition.

4. Keep a safe distance—Maintain a safe distance from the fire pit, especially if you have children or pets. Establish a designated seating area, and make sure everyone knows not to get too close to the flames.

5. Never leave fires unattended—Never leave a burning fire pit unattended. Even a small breeze can cause embers to fly out and ignite nearby objects. Assign an adult to watch the fire at all times and have a fire extinguisher, water hose or bucket of sand nearby for emergencies.

6. Choose the right fuel—Use only approved firewood or charcoal in your fire pit. Avoid burning trash, leaves or any treated or painted wood, as they can release harmful toxins and create uncontrollable fires.

7. Start the fire safely—Use kindling, fire starters or a charcoal chimney to ignite the fire. Avoid using gasoline, kerosene or other flammable liquids, as they can lead to dangerous flare-ups.

8. Extinguish the fire properly—When you’re done enjoying the fire, use a fire poker or long-handled shovel to spread the embers and allow them to cool down. Slowly pour water over the ashes, stirring them to ensure everything is extinguished completely. Keep an eye on the pit for several hours to ensure there are no lingering embers.

We’re Here to Help

Safety should always be the top priority when creating outdoor memories around the fire, and following appropriate safety precautions can help you enjoy the warmth and beauty of a fire pit in your backyard while minimizing risk to your family and property. Still, accidents may still happen, making adequate homeowners insurance potentially critical.
